Hatch Cover Water Tight Inspections with Ultrasounds

Our company can provide hatch covers water tightness inspection services. Our experienced surveyors in connection with their specialized equipment can detect and report any potential leakage. Our company and equipment that we use is accepted by P&I and classification societies.

Our survey is not restricted to the hatch covers rubber backing - compression bar water tight arrangement. We also can survey all cargo holds access hatches, ventilators, cement loading holes, etc. Also using this method holes to BHDs can be easily found. This is very important for Sea Water - F.O BHDs, or Sea water - Cargo Hold BHDs where small leakages can lead to excessive cargo claims or can lead to pollution.

Act preventive and do not wait P&I to request hatch cover inspections. Request a survey and we will pin point areas and the level of leakage. We will suggest corrective actions and help you rectify the problem to prepare the vessel for next loading.

Survey Procedure

The equipment we use, consist of two major components. The ultrasound transmitter and the ultrasound receiver.
The surveyor places the transmitter inside the cargo hold, on the tank top. Preferably in the centre, if the cargo hold is symmetric.
Then the surveyor places the receiver near the hatch coaming and calibrates it with the hatch cover open.

After completion of the calibration the crew close and secure the hatch covers.
Finally the surveyor starts the inspection by placing the receivers microphone along the water tight sealing arrangement. If the receiver detects a db value above the acceptable, the surveyors marks this area and severity of leakage.
After completion of the survey a complete report is handed to the managers with the findings.
